MYSA U5 and U6 Recreation Philosophy, Practice Ideas and Expectations
Philosophy
At this age score is not important. It is not about winning or losing, it’s about getting time on the ball and fun! Share with your parents that we don’t keep score at this age because it’s not what is important for this sport and your player’s development. All kids should leave practices and games with more love for the game! The goal should be that every player wants to come to practice/games, grows their love for the game, wants to come back next season and bring 2-3 new friends to play!
Practice Ideas and Expectations
45 – 55 minutes
Every player should have a ball; majority of the activities should include a ball for every player
15 minutes of free play/warm up including movement education
15 minutes of game-like activities, body awareness and maze games
15 minutes of 2v2/3v3 game with two goals, no goalkeepers
Things to work on:
Dribbling with both feet and head up
Starting to look for teammates in open space
Different movements/manipulations of the ball with both feet
Passing techniques (inside of foot or laces, no toes!!)
Receiving techniques (inside of the foot or laces, no outside of foot!)
Shooting techniques (inside of foot or laces, no toes!!)
Game Day Expectations
FUN!! ALL PLAYERS SHOULD BE HAVING FUN!! ALL PLAYERS FROM BOTH TEAMS SHOULD LEAVE THE FIELD WITH A SMILE ON THEIR FACE!!
Games are 3v3 with no goalkeepers
Coaches “referee” games, Teach proper rules
Formation should be in triangles
All kids should get equal playing time
Emphasize things worked on at practice
Keeping Game Balanced!!
If a team gets up by 4 goals, opposing team should add 1 player (making it 4v3). If a team gets up by 6 goals, opposing teams should add 2 players (making it 5v3).
If a player is clearly dominating, add rules to make it harder for that player (i.e. must score with opposite foot, needs to pass to another player before scoring, team has to get 5 passes before shooting). Beating a team by more than 6 goals is unacceptable!!
Its important as a coach of young soccer players you understand this philosophy and understand why running up the score is not good for anyone. In soccer, you will have kids that develop faster at a young age and will be able to out run most players. What happens in soccer, when they get older and start playing 9v9 and 11v11, one player won’t dominate the game, it a team sport. If you don’t develop that player early to use both feet, pass the ball properly, and focus on soccer techniques, then they will end up actually being behind the rest of the age group when everyone else’s physical development catches up. Soccer is a team sport, it’s not about one player.
MYSA U5 AND U6 RECREATIONAL SOCCER RULES OF THE GAME
The MYSA U5 and U6 Divisions play matches governed by the latest FIFA Laws of the Game, with the following exceptions:
FIELD OF PLAY
Dimensions: The field shall be rectangular, with a length of 30 yards and a width of 20 yards.
Markings:
EQUIPMENT
Goals: Goals shall be 4 feet high and 6 feet across and must be anchored to the field by no less than two goal anchors.
Corner Markings: Corners should be marked with regulation corner flags or disc cones.
Ball: All matches shall be played with a size three (3) soccer ball of official size and weight.
MATCH PLAY
Number of Players: The maximum number of players on the field per team shall not exceed three (3). There is no goalkeeper. Matches may be played with fewer players so long as each team has an equal number of players on the field.
U5-U6 Age Group Rules: Players are allowed to play for the Fall season if they are 4 by September 1. Players are allowed to play for the Spring season if they are 4 by March 1. Once they play the first year, every player is required to play in their respective age group. This means some may play U5 for 2 years depending on when they are allowed to start with their birthdate.
Match Length: Matches will consist of two 20 minute halves with a 5 minute half time. No time-outs are allowed. Referee’s may stop the match for injuries.
Referees:
Matches will be officiated by a coach from each team. A match timekeeper may keep time from the sidelines or a coach may do so on the field. There will be no line judges used.
Spectators: All spectators must sit on the opposite side of the field from the teams. Spectators must sit behind the dashed parent boundary line.
Offsides: Offsides will not be called.
Slidetackles/Playing on the Ground: Slidetackles are NOT allowed under any circumstances and will result in an indirect kick for the opposite team. Repeated slidetackling is grounds for a player being sent off the field. Players may NOT play a ball while on the ground – this creates a dangerous situation and will result in possession being awarded to the opposing team with an indirect free kick. This includes sliding saves and players falling on top of the ball.
Start of Play: Field sides shall be chosen by coin toss or mutual agreement of the coaches. The team which wins the coin toss shall decide to either kick-off or choose which side of the field to defend. If kick-off is chosen, the team losing the coin toss shall decide which side of the field to defend. Match play begins from the midfield has mark and opposing players must remain outside the center field circle until the ball is kicked.
Stoppage of Play:
Scoring
Substitution: Substitutions may be made by either team during any stoppage of play.
Overtime: No overtime play is allowed as score is not kept.
