MYSA U7 and U8 Recreation Philosophy, Practice Ideas and Expectations
Philosophy
At this age score is not important. It is not about winning or losing, it’s about getting time on the ball and fun! Share with your parents that we don’t keep score at this age because it’s not what is important for this sport and your player’s development. All kids should leave practices and games with more love for the game! The goal should be that every player wants to come to practice/games, grows their love for the game, wants to come back next season and bring 2-3 new friends to play! The more kids that love and play the sport, the better experience it will be for everyone!
Practice Ideas and Expectations
50 – 60 minutes
Every player should have a ball; majority of the activities should include a ball for every player. Should not have players waiting in lines. Lines for activities should be no more than 2-3 players. Reps for each player should happen at least every 20 seconds. If they are standing for more than that, they become unengaged!
15 minutes of free player/warm up, dynamic stretches, skill activities
15 minutes of individual body awareness activities, partner activities
15 minutes of 1v1, 2v1, 1v2, 2v2
15 minutes of small sided 3v3/4v4, two goals, no goalkeepers
Things to work on:
Continue Dribbling, Passing, Receiving, Shooting Techniques
1v1 Attacking, introduce moves to beat a player (step over, scissors, pull back)
1v1 Defending, introduce how to stay in front of player, slow them down
2v2 Attacking, introduce working with a partner to beat an opponent
2v2 Defending, introduce working with a partner to help defend an opponent
Begin working in groups of 3 and 4 players with space awareness
Game Day Expectations
FUN!! ALL PLAYERS SHOULD BE HAVING FUN!! ALL PLAYERS FROM BOTH TEAMS SHOULD LEAVE THE FIELD WITH A SMILE ON THEIR FACE!!
Games are 4v4 with no goalkeepers
Coaches “referee” games, Teach proper rules
Formations should still be based around creating triangles around the field
All kids should get equal playing time
Emphasize things worked on at practice
Keeping Game Balanced!!
If a team gets up by 4 goals, opposing team should add 1 player (making it 4v3). If a team gets up by 6 goals, opposing teams should add 2 players (making it 5v3).
If a player is clearly dominating, add rules to make it harder for that player (i.e. must score with opposite foot, needs to pass to another player before scoring, team has to get 5 passes before shooting). Beating a team by more than 6 goals is unacceptable!!
Its important as a coach of young soccer players you understand this philosophy and understand why running up the score is not good for anyone. In soccer, you will have kids that develop faster at a young age and will be able to out run most players. What happens in soccer, when they get older and start playing 9v9 and 11v11, one player won’t dominate the game, it a team sport. If you don’t develop that player early to use both feet, pass the ball properly, and focus on soccer techniques, then they will end up actually being behind the rest of the age group when everyone else’s physical development catches up. Soccer is a team sport, it’s not about one player.
MYSA U7 AND U8 RECREATIONAL SOCCER RULES OF THE GAME
The MYSA U7 and U8 Divisions play matches governed by the latest FIFA Laws of the Game, with the following exceptions:
FIELD OF PLAY
Dimensions: The field shall be rectangular, with a length of 35 yards and a width of 25 yards.
Markings:
EQUIPMENT
Goals: Goals shall be 4 feet high and 6 feet across and must be anchored to the field by no less than two goal anchors.
Corner Markings: Corners should be marked with regulation corner flags or disc cones.
Ball: All matches shall be played with a size three (3) soccer ball of official size and weight.
MATCH PLAY
Number of Players: The maximum number of players on the field per team shall not exceed four (4). There is no goalkeeper. Matches may be played with fewer players so long as each team has an equal number of players on the field.
Match Length: Matches will consist of two 25 minute halves with a 5 minute half time. No time-outs are allowed. Referee’s may stop the match for injuries.
Referees:
Matches will be officiated by a coach from each team. A match timekeeper may keep time from the sidelines or a coach may do so on the field. There will be no line judges used.
Spectators: All spectators must sit on the opposite side of the field from the teams. Spectators must sit behind the dashed parent boundary line.
Offsides: Offsides will not be called.
Slidetackles/Playing on the Ground: Slidetackles are NOT allowed under any circumstances and will result in an indirect kick for the opposite team. Repeated slidetackling is grounds for a player being sent off the field. Players may NOT play a ball while on the ground – this creates a dangerous situation and will result in possession being awarded to the opposing team with an indirect free kick. This includes sliding saves and players falling on top of the ball.
Start of Play: Field sides shall be chosen by coin toss or mutual agreement of the coaches. The team which wins the coin toss shall decide to either kick-off or choose which side of the field to defend. If kick-off is chosen, the team losing the coin toss shall decide which side of the field to defend. Match play begins from the midfield has mark and opposing players must remain outside the center field circle until the ball is kicked.
Stoppage of Play:
Scoring
Substitution: Substitutions may be made by either team during any stoppage of play.
Overtime: No overtime play is allowed as score is not kept.
